About this Event

Participants will experience a range of engaging fieldwork activities, covering site selection, risk assessment, sampling methods, data collection and simple recording techniques suitable for community and education settings.

The course supports both formal fieldwork and more exploratory and experiencial approaches, helping participants build confidence in leading safe, inclusive and engaging outdoor science sessions. Emphasis is placed on practical skills, use of accessible equipment, and adapting activities for different ages and abilities.

In river environments, participants will explore flow, habitats and biodiversity through activities such as invertebrate sampling, water quality observations, river characteristic measuring and habitat surveys. Coastal sessions will investigate rocky shore and shoreline ecosystems, including zonation, species identification and simple biodiversity surveys, highlighting how tides and physical processes shape coastal life.

This workshop is designed to empower educators and community leaders to deliver meaningful outdoor science experiences that foster curiosity, environmental understanding and connection to place. It is suitable for educators, outdoor leaders, youth workers, volunteers and others working or volunteering in education or community learning.

Adult participants only.

Expect an immersive, 100% outdoor learning experience – with fresh air, moving water and changing tides. Bring suitable outdoor clothing and waterproof footwear (wellies)!

Note: Field Studies Ireland can deliver this training directly to your team or local environment. If you have a group interested in this course, get in touch for more information tailored to your location.
