About this Event

Fury of the peaks: A journey through the new dangers of frozen mountain ranges

Louie Bell is a Geography PhD student at Queen's College with very close ties to the Scott Polar Research Institute after completing his MPhil here in 2024.

From Louie:

Imagine living in fear that the quiet mountains above you will one day reach down to wreak disaster and destruction in your community. For those who live downstream of glaciers, lakes and frozen mountains, this fear is rising as the world gets warmer and warmer. In this talk we will journey from the planes of the Ganges to the peaks of the mighty Himalaya, from the serene lakes of the Peruvian Cordillera to the frozen Alaskan Wilderness. We will learn how and why the frozen landscape is changing, and what the impacts on the local people may be. Pack warm... where we're headed is cold - and dangerous.

Tea & Talks are designed for a non-academic audience and offer the chance to learn something new in a friendly environment. Bring along a notepad (or just an open mind) and join us for a cuppa.
