About this Event

Te Kaiaotanga o Te Reo returns to Whakatū in 2026, bringing together iwi, hapori, educators, reo champions, and language advocates from across Te Tauihu for two days for our Māori Language Revitalisation Symposium.

Te Tauihu is one of many regions that has experienced the devastating loss of te reo Māori. We stand in a time where iwi must lead their own journeys of revitalisation, creating pathways that ensure te reo Māori not only survives, but flourishes for generations to come.

Ngāti Apa ki Te Rā Tō and Rangitāne o Wairau are proud to work in partnership to present the fourth Māori language revitalisation symposium, Te Kaiaotanga o Te Reo, named by language champion Sir Tīmoti Kāretu.

This kaupapa brings together leading reo Māori exponents from across Aotearoa to inspire, challenge, and empower iwi, whānau, kura, and hapori to strengthen reo revitalisation efforts.

Across two days, you can expect:

  • Inspiring kaikōrero from across the motu
  • Panel discussions exploring reo Māori revitalisation challenges and solutions
  • Kōrero grounded in mātauranga Māori
  • An expo space showcasing reo Māori initiatives, organisations, and resources
  • Kai stalls available on site
  • Plenty of time for whakawhanaungatanga, reflection, and connection

This symposium is designed to be inclusive, encouraging, and empowering, whether you are actively leading reo revitalisation efforts or supporting the kaupapa within your hapori.
