About this Event
TC.KYLIE, a jazz fusion pianist, performs regularly in both Hong Kong and London. Inspired by the likes of Shaun Martin and Robert Glasper, she also continues to write songs in the areas of Japanese acid jazz, following Fox Capture Plan, Jabberloop, Toconoma, Jizue and Bohemianvoodoo. Her set will be supported by a range of fellow talented LCCM masters students in the jazz genre.
Prior to becoming a performing artist, Kylie previously worked as a news documentary journalist for radio and TV networks in Hong Kong, She spent much of her time connecting human stories and investigating the connections between people and society which was inspiring and enlightening but also often heavy and difficult within increasingly tricky political landscapes unfolding around her.
Under the changing social environment in her hometown and with the hit of the pandemic, she decided to take an indefinite well-earned break in 2020 to take care of her own well-being & passions. During a stay at a jazz cafe and hostel in Lake Towada in Aomori, Japan, encouraged by the hostel owner as a jazz enthusiast; Kylie sat in front of the piano, contemplated and played scattered notes to express what she had been enduring during her time as a political/social reporter.
Finding herself joyfully picking up music in her life again after years of leaving it behind, she wrote the song “The Last Grief ” a tribute to one of her deepest sorrows and in remembrance of her best friend in childhood who battled heavily with depression. This song went on to be an official selection for the International Toronto Music Video Festival as well as the Toronto Asian Independent Film Festival in 2023. Leading her band IX (初久) with more than 100,000 streams on Spotify, they were nominated for two consecutive years by the Tone Music Awards achieving Top 10 positions in their Annual Music Video Awards and their Top 10 Hits of the Year in 2022 and 2023.
Music had healed her soul and in 2023, Kylie decided to start a new life chapter by moving to London to study contemporary jazz music. After completing a master degree in Contemporary Music Performance at LCCM London, she further extended her music journey launching herself as a solo artist. This year producing her debut instrumental jazz fusion album. The record notably features her unique rearrangement of Merry-Go-Round of Life by the legendary Joe Hisaishi, the theme song of the famous Japanese animation “Howl’s Moving Castle”.
Another important song on the debut record is “Rebirth”, here Kylie showcases her unique creativity using math-rock elements, switching between odd time signatures, inspired by ‘Mouse’ on the Keys (another notable acid jazz band from Japan). The song portrays a young adventurer surviving seemingly insurmountable odds, echoing what Kylie herself has experienced throughout the years.
Another track “Stage” integrates Hong Kong’s Cantonpop culture with Kylie’s own piano solo intro, paying respect to Eason Chan’s “Every Tomorrow” in 1999.
T.C Kylies versatility and creativity as an artist is reflected in the collective musical projects she is part of. Alongside her solo project, she is also part of a new international band specializing in jazz fusion who actively tour globally & which includes highly acclaimed musicians including Victor Wu on flute, wind synth and saxophone, as well as Natasha Petrovic on violin. T.C Kylie is currently preparing to launch her first solo project which will be backed by international tour dates.
