Durham University Palatinate Orchestra’s 90-piece Symphony Orchestra plays Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, his Pathétique Symphony, and music by Elgar and Pejačević in Durham Cathedral. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, the so-called 'Pathétique Symphony', premiered 9 days before his death and is a work of profound emotional intensity. It is a programme symphony; however, its narrative is a mystery, and Tchaikovsky provokes listeners to guess the story themselves with some hearing themes of love, fate, tragedy, and despair.
The concert opens with Dora Pejačević’s vibrant and colourful 'Overture' before Edward Elgar’s 'In the South (Alassio)' closes the first half with a sweeping and vivid musical tour of an Italian landscape.
