About this Event
Don't miss the rare chance to witness a Taíno Areyto, a ceremonial dance of the Taino, the indigenous people of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti/Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas. Twenty members of the Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén (Puerto Rico) are bringing this performance to Chicago for the first time! It's a unique opportunity to learn about the Taíno Indigenous people of Puerto Rico (Borikén) and their rich traditions.
This performance is a highlight of our exhibition, ¡Taíno Vive! Caribbean Indigenous Resistance, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute, the Field Museum, and the Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén. We will set up a tent with seating on our beautiful lawn to recreate a Batey-like space for this historic ceremony.
Two performances:
- Friday, May 31, 2024 at 11 AM
- Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 12 PM
Suggested donation of $10.
While there is no charge for entry, if you are able to make a donation it will support the work of Concilio Taíno Guatu-Ma-cu A Borikén.
This is made possible by the generous support of our presenting sponsor, The Angell Foundation, and our supporting sponsors: Senator Omar Aquino, Alderperson Jessie Fuentes, the State of Illinois, the City of Chicago’s Department of Special Events, the Chicago Park District, and The Illinois Arts Council.
