The wine growing region of Bordeaux is home to the most famous Chateaux in the world of wine. The long list of names begins with Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Mouton-Rothschild, Haut-Brion and Petrus — names synonymous with the world’s greatest Cabernets and Merlots.Bordeaux is also famous as the largest wine growing region in all of France. As well as wines from legendary Chateaux — wines which account for just a small fraction of the region’s 120,000 hectares of vines — Bordeaux produces a vast variety of delicious wines in every price category from both its Left and Right Banks. And we’d like you to taste as many of them as you possibly can.
As Left Bank and Right Bank imply, what we think of as Bordeaux is actually two separate wine growing regions. The regions are separated by the Gironde River, into which feed the Dordogne River from the north and the Garonne River from the south. But Left and Right Banks aren’t separated just by geography. The soils of the Left Bank are composed primarily of gravel, which Cabernet vines like. Across the river, Right Bank soils are primarily comprised of clay and limestone, which Merlot vines prefer.
Our tasting of Left Bank Cabs takes us from the district of Medoc in the north to the district of Graves in the south, through the legendary communes of Saint-Estephe, Pauillac, Saint-Julian, Margaux and Pessac-Leognan along the way. On the Right Bank, we taste Merlots from fabled communes like Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, as well as those from less renowned communes like Fronsac, Cotes de Bourg and Cotes de Blaye.
So come along and taste the Cabs and Merlots of the Left and Right Banks of Bordeaux with us. Explore what distinguishes them from Cabs and Merlots from anywhere else. And discover what makes them the world’s best.
Orchard Pointe Only: As we prepare for our Spanish Festival this Saturday, in lieu of a full seminar, we will be offering select wines as a free open house tasting - stop by on Thursday or Friday and taste at your own pace.
