During the month of November, particularly on November 1st and 2nd, Haitians celebrate "Fèt Gede", this important celebration in the Vodou religious calendar honors the spirits of deceased loved ones, celebrates their lives and seeks their guidance and protection. Celebrations include altars, veves (ground drawings), special offerings of food and drink, and sacred dancing and polyrhythmic drumming. During this two-hour Haitian dance and culture workshop, students will focus on “Banda” dance.
The banda has its origins in the rural communities of Haiti, where it emerged as a celebratory dance performed during agricultural festivals, religious ceremonies and social gatherings. Its history is closely linked to the resilience and creativity of the Haitian people, reflecting their cultural identity and collective spirit. Banda is associated with the celebration of the dead in Haitian culture. Banda dance is known for its energetic and rhythmic movements, which often involve complex footwork, hip swings and gestural expressions. The dancers move in sync with the pulsating rhythms of the drums, creating a dynamic and captivating show that engages both the performers and the audience. Banda embodies the cultural heritage and traditions of the Haitian people, reflecting their strength, creativity and spiritual resilience. Through its rhythmic energy and expressive movements, the banda celebrates the rich diversity and vitality of Haitian culture, preserving ancient traditions and fostering a sense of cultural continuity and identity.
