About this Event

Tantra: Expanding Human Possibility

What does it really mean to expand and be liberated?

Is Tantra a mystical cult, a misunderstood spiritual technology—or a radical, earth-rooted form of humanism long before the word existed?

In popular culture, Tantra is often reduced to its most sensational aspects, especially sexuality. Yet historically, Tantra is a vast philosophical and spiritual system that explores the full spectrum of human experience—body, mind, desire, limitation, and transformation.

In this talk, Norhaiyah Mahmood will explore Tantra beyond the myths and misconceptions. Drawing from philosophical traditions such as Samkhya, as well as her own personal engagement with Tantric teachings, she will examine Tantra as a framework for understanding human potential and overcoming limitations.

Rather than seeing the physical world as something to reject, Tantra begins with the radical idea that human experience itself is the starting point for transformation.

This session will explore questions such as:

  • What is Tantra really about beyond the popular stereotypes?
  • How does Tantra understand the relationship between the body, mind, and consciousness?
  • Can Tantra be understood as an early expression of humanistic thought?
  • What can modern secular thinkers learn from Tantric philosophy?

Whether you are curious about Tantra, interested in philosophy, or exploring humanistic perspectives on spirituality, this talk offers a thoughtful and grounded introduction to a tradition that continues to provoke both fascination and misunderstanding.

Join us for an evening of exploration, conversation, and reflection.
About the Speaker

Norhaiyah Mahmood is a writer, speaker, and social activist from Singapore. A trained nurse by profession, she has been involved in community and humanist work for many years and previously served as President of the Humanist Society (Singapore).

Initiated in the Shakta Tantric tradition under the late Guru Sankara Menon (Bhasurananda Natha) of Kerala, Norhaiyah approaches Tantra from both lived experience and philosophical study.
Her current research explores Tantra as a form of indigenous humanism and its relevance to contemporary humanist thought.
