This is the question Tami Parr sets out to answer in Goats in America. Parr traces the goat's history in the United States: as a (losing) competitor to the cow meat and dairy industry; an alternative food and milk source in wartime; a herd animal for a variety of Indigenous, immigrant, and back-to-the-land communities; and a rising presence in both urban gardens and social media feeds. Ultimately, the story of goats in America is a story of America: of race and ethnicity, immigration and assimilation, class, media, politics, and the environment.
