The St Nicholas Chamber Choir presents a concert of English Renaissance works focusing on the motets and masses of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd in the unique and intimate candlelit altar setting of Mikael Agricolan kirkko.Seated directly beneath the choir, the audience will hear William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, composed amid the intense religious turmoil that followed the English Reformation. At a time when the composition and performance of Catholic masses were forbidden, Byrd’s work had to be created and performed in secret. Similarly, the motets of Thomas Tallis reflect the shifting religious landscape of his lifetime, evolving and oscillating between the richly polyphonic and imitative style of the Catholic rite to the clear, homophonic declamation favoured by the emerging Protestant tradition. Also included in the program are works by Richard Farrant and Orlando Gibbons.
