About this Event

Join us for a conversation with designer Gareth Neal in the Production Space workshops at STEAMhouse*.

Building from a simple invitation to think through what making means to him, Gareth will talk about digital crafting, perfection and imperfection, teaching a robot to crochet, and whether the hand always needs to be present in the digital handmade.

This is the latest in a series of events with leading artists, designers and makers held in the Production Space workshops at STEAMhouse and has been developed through a collaboration with Eastside Projects. The programme aims to open out new thinking and develop collective conversations around approaches to making.

About Gareth

Gareth Neal is an East London-based furniture designer who, through material inventiveness and curiosity, has helped to shape a new era in contemporary British craft. Gareth is passionate about honouring people, process and place, working collaboratively to champion the use of indigenous materials and traditional processes. Gareth’s studio produces a variety of furniture pieces including seating, cabinetry and sculptural artworks, all with a focus on sustainability and respect to the environment.

As a hands-on designer and maker, he is fascinated by processes, whether that be with traditional tools or the latest computer-controlled technology. This, combined with in-depth knowledge of historical techniques and aesthetics, gives his designs rich narratives and contextual reference points, while continually testing the limits of craft and design.
