Our caring hands are excited to welcome you to another free workshop, this time on the important impacts of hearing loss and how that affects balance, falling and social isolation.
Join Clinical Audiologist Kathryn Penno from the Hearing and Cognition Centre for this informative session where you will be able to:
- Discover the impacts of hearing loss as it relates to behaviour, confidence and demeanour
- Learn the connection between hearing loss, auditory pathways and balance
- Explore ways to manage hearing loss within yourself or a loved one
Plus, Kathryn will bring her otoscope and tympanometer along if you’d like her to check your outer ear /ear canals and middle ear status (please note this is a screening only).
This workshop is open to everyone with an interest in hearing health.

Hearing loss is a health issue that affects us all in different ways and often hard to quantify because it’s invisible.
“If you had a broken leg in a cast or use a walking frame, people can immediately see you may need extra support or guidance, and they accommodate or support your needs,” Kathryn says.
“With hearing loss, it isn’t the same. People can’t immediately see the impact of hearing loss, and it’s not that they won’t accommodate, it’s that they don’t usually know how,” Kathryn says. “Often, we see that family members may notice a loved one’s hearing loss, before that person admits they have a hearing loss.”
Another concern is that people with untreated hearing loss change their behaviours, for example they remove themselves from social situations with fears of not being included or not understanding what is happening.
“Hearing is our social sense, and we need to ensure we look after our hearing and our brains to optimise our social interactions. We are social creatures wired for connection!” Kathryn says.
Don’t miss out on your chance to listen and ask questions about hearing health with our local audiologist and community member, Kathryn Penno.
Register now – tickets are no charge, but you will need to be booked as places are limited. Morning tea is included.
