Join us for a facilitated conversation between 4th grade students and their families about puberty.
About this Event

This workshop is intended to facilitate a conversation between 4th grade students and their parents/caregivers about the physical, emotional, and social changes that come with puberty. Research shows that pre-teens are interested in having these conversations with their families and that they are better prepared for the changes ahead of them when they can talk to their families about them.

The onset of puberty can begin anytime between the ages of 8 and 14 years old and often starts before many parents feel ready to discuss it with their children. And even if your child has not begun puberty, it is possible that their friends and peers are experiencing the physical, emotional, and social changes and your child is noticing them. This workshop is intended to be a conversation starter between families and students in preparation for more discussions like it in the near future.

This interactive program will include a high-level overview of subjects like: physical changes of puberty, emotional and social changes, basic explanations of bodily functions like menstruation and erections. Our approach relies on factual, developmentally-appropriate, evidence-based information. Students and families will learn to use accurate language for body parts and changes, ask trusted adults questions and respond as trusted adults, practice self-care and hygiene, and respond calmly and respectfully to changes in themselves and others.
