Join us at Visitor Centre for a special evening marking five decades of dedicated shorebird protection at Gibraltar Point. Enjoy a warm meal, engaging talk, and fascinating stories from past Shorebird Wardens, as we journey through the remarkable history of the Little Tern in Lincolnshire.
Following on from Barrie Wilkinson’s pioneering work at Gibraltar Point in the 1960’s and early ‘70s, a dedicated Shorebird Warden has been present on the beach every summer since 1976. At that time there were several other colonies of Little Terns on the Lincolnshire coast, but without protection they slowly faded away.
The Shorebird Warden, supported by staff and volunteers, face an eventful season of emotional highs and lows. These mercurial birds seemingly destined to make life as difficult as possible for themselves. High tides, strong winds, sand blow, a whole host of predators and human disturbance all combine to make looking after Little Terns one of the great wildlife challenges in the UK. Despite these pressures, the commitment of those involved has been crucial in giving the Little Terns of Gibraltar Point a fighting chance.
A dinner of jacket potato and chili (beef or lentil) will be served with tea or coffee.
Booking is required, as places are limited. This event is for adults and families with children aged 13 and over. Parking is available, normal parking fees apply.
