Mary Proctor, often called “the children’s astronomer,” was one of the late 19th and early 20th century’s most engaging popularisers of astronomy. Building on the legacy of her father, the astronomer Richard Proctor, she brought the wonders of the night sky to broad audiences through accessible books, lectures, and articles.
This talk explores Mary Proctor’s life, career, and influence through the lens of one of her lesser-known works, The Romance of the Moon. By revisiting this charming and imaginative book, we uncover how Proctor blended scientific knowledge with storytelling to inspire curiosity and helped shape public enthusiasm for astronomy during her era.
