Brian Kerr explores the ancient site’s story over the centuries, from its 1450 origins. Plus our quickfire mini-AGM & activities round-up.
About this Event

About the talk:

As a newly-minted graduate our guest speaker Brian Kerr directed the excavation of this towerhouse site in the south side of Glasgow in 1980-81. The project eventually emerged into the light of publication in 2016. He will look at some of the key elements in the site’s development, from the construction of the towerhouse in 1450, through a major refurbishment and extension in the 17th century, to abandonment and partial demolition in c. 1740, and in particular at how the ambitions and careers of two owners, Alan Lord Cathcart and Bryce Semple, shaped its development and use.

About the speaker:

A native of Glasgow, Brian Kerr graduated in Archaeology and Medieval History from Glasgow University in 1980, and after five years digging in and around Glasgow he moved south to join English Heritage as a field archaeologist, retiring from Historic England in 2021 as Head of Archaeological Investigation. During that time he directed archaeological work at Windsor Castle, first on the recording of the Round Tower, and then in the salvage and recording of a large section of the Upper Ward after the 1992 fire.

FINDING THE VENUE: The Deep End (21 Nithsdale St, Glasgow G41 2PZ) is situated on the left hand side of Nithsdale Street as you walk west from its junction with Pollokshaws Rd, and is accessed by a sloped descending path from street level that leads to the basement-level venue. A venue sign is displayed on the railings at the top of the path on Nithsdale St, but the building number of 21 is not visible at street level.

Please note, it is a different venue to the old Govanhill Baths on Calder Street, although both venues are operated by Govanhill Baths Community Trust.

TRAVEL: The nearest railway station is Queen's Park (4 minutes walk) and many buses also stop nearby on Pollokshaws Rd. On-street parking can be found around the area.
