Talk by Uncle Tony: Wild Growth Woodlands of Singapore

Open to the Public
Singapore has undergone substantial change since the early 19th century, the original Dipterocarp and Mangrove forests were rapidly destroyed by agriculturalists cultivating gambier and pepper while the mangroves were depleted for firewood, boat building and charcoal production. The original (primeval) forests were largely depleted by the end of the 19th century and by the early 20th century rubber was cultivated over the former gambier lands. During the later 20th century much of the former rubber lands were converted to residential and industrial uses leaving a patchwork of wild growth woodland areas of different make-up that provide habitat for native and exotic fauna.
This talky talky discusses the development and makeup of these regenerating woodlands and highlights their importance in supporting our extant wildlife. It is organized in preparation for the Singapore Bird Race 2025, which this year highlights “Woodland Birds” as its theme.
Speaker: Tony O’Dempsey (Uncle Tony)
Uncle Tony has been active in promoting conservation of habitats in Singapore for the past 20 years. He represents NSS at development engagements hosted by Gahmen agencies and has authored a number of NSS position papers addressing controversial developments. Don’t Pray-Pray ah!
