Talk: Breaking Barriers: Addressing the Challenges of Accessing Health, Education and Social Care for Young Autistic Persons and their Families

Chinyere (Chichi) Ehosiem is the manager and clinical lead for the Young Adults Mental Health Service with the Community Mental Health Team of Sheffield Health and Social Care. She has spearheaded service improvements and contributed to community projects aimed at supporting children, young people, and families to create inclusive opportunities. Recently Chichi has been working on developing the new 16-25 service for young people’s transition from Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services to the Adult and Community Mental Health services.

Chichi is a HCPC registered Occupational therapist focussing on neurodiversity and mental health. She has served as the Transition Lead and Specialist Autism Practitioner with the Sheffield Adult Autism and Neurodevelopmental Service (SAANS), supporting young autistic persons and their families in transitioning to adult services and accessing health and social care support. Her passion is evident in her collaborative work with families, voluntary sectors, charities, and educational institutions and in supporting children and young persons with Special Education Needs and Disability (SEND).

Chichi's personal experience as a carer of an autistic young person fuels her commitment to raising awareness and advocating for the rights of autistic people. She is a governance member of the Sheffield Autism Partnership Board (SAPB) ensuring the views of autistic people, and their families/carers drive positive change. She has effectively led initiatives to tackle health inequalities, including support for the ethnically diverse group which positions her as a vital force in the community.

Having acquired two masters degree in Occupational therapy and Information Technology, a PGDip and BSc, Chichi's rich academic background complements her practical skills.
