About this Event
Join author Henry Buckton for an exploration of the industries that helped drive Somerset’s part in the Industrial Revolution. Based on his book, ‘Somerset Industrial Heritage’, this talk looks at the mining, quarrying, and extraction industries that once transformed both the county’s economy and its landscapes.
Somerset’s countryside is full of reminders of this past—ivy‑covered ruins, abandoned railway lines, and roads to nowhere. Henry will guide us through these lost industrial sites, revealing what once took place in today’s quiet and remote locations.
The talk covers:
- Iron ore mining on the Brendon Hills and Exmoor
- Copper mining around the Quantocks
- Lead mining on the Mendip Hills
- The Somerset Coalfield
- Peat extraction on the Somerset Levels
- Stone quarrying, including Ham Hill
- Somerset’s coastal oil boom
The talk will be followed by a book signing.
