TAKAAT (pronounced tuh-cot, meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek) is a dynamic and intense rock trio formed by members of the rhythm section from Mdou Moctar, the celebrated Tuareg guitarist and songwriter. The band grew out of soundchecks on tour, where the three musicians — Ahmoudou Madassane (guitar/vocals), Mikey Coltun (bass), and Souleymane Ibrahim (drums) — explored their shared love of cranked-up amps and blown speakers.TAKAAT’s music blends West African guitar traditions from the Sahel with the raw energy and DIY ethos of post-punk and noise rock, drawing influence from bands like Fugazi and Unwound. Their sound is energetic, dark, improvisational, and visceral, moving between hypnotic rhythms and explosive bursts of sound.
