Description:

Primary care as the first point of contact in the UK's healthcare system, offers a crucial aooportunity to address health inequalities affecting ethnic minority communities. By improving access and quality of care at this level, we can work towards closing the health gap and ensuring equitable outcomes for all.

Join us at this Labour Party Conference fringe event for an insightful discussion on addressing health disparities within ethnic minority groups in the UK. Learn from experts in the field and participate in engaging conversations to drive positive change in healthcare.

About the Panellists

1)Cllr Denise Scott McDonald (Chair)

Denise Scott-McDonald is the former deputy leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. She has been on the cabinet, for over nine years, since 2015 leading on a variety of portfolios including Health and Adult Social Care, Transport, Regeneration and Culture and communities. Plus she has been a member of the LGA’s national policy board for Health and Wellbeing. Denise is also the president of the National Members Council of the Coop Group, one of British’s leading retail giants. It is a national role where she champions cooperative values and principle within the sector and beyond. Denise was also a university lecturer teaching journalism at a number of London universities. Prior to this, she worked as a journalist and news producer in both London and New York.


2) The Rt Hon Stephen Kinnock MP ( invited)

Stephen Kinnock was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Care on 8 July 2024. His portfolio includes hospital and community discharge,health and social care integration, dementia, primary care (general practice, Ph*rm*cy, eye care, and dentistry) and community health, including neighbourhood health services. He was elected as the MP for Aberafan Maesteg in July 2024.Stephen has been an MP since 2015.


3) Dr Ivan Beckley MD

Dr. Ivan Beckley is a medical doctor and entrepreneur, CEO and co-founder of Suvera. Suvera is a digital health company that combines technology and care delivery to power proactive care throughout the UK. Most recently he was appointed a non-executive director position at Barnet, Enfield and Haringey mental health trust. The largest mental health trust in North London and became one of the youngest ever to hold the position. Previously he worked with leading health technology companies including Google's DeepMind and Ada Health. Dr Beckley has been recognised for his work, including being named one of the top 10 black students in the UK and the producer of the Best British podcast documentary called The Bias Diagnosis, commissioned by Amazon's podcast production company - Audible. He holds a BSc in Global Health, an MSc in Data Science, and a medical degree from UCL Medical School.


4) Davina Brown

Davina Brown is a graduate from the well respected GMB GRASP programme. The GRASP programme identifies, trains and empowers community leaders from ethnic minority backgrounds so they could be effective advocates in tackling race inequality in the workplace and in their communities. Davina is a GMB Race Ambassador and is also the project coordinator for a large Black Women empowerment group in South East London called Soul Purpose 360. She was awarded the Pride of Croydon Award 2022 for Outstanding contribution to the community in promoting Race Equality. Davina's previous role as a Contract Manager involved monitoring the quality of providers and commissioning services ensuring they created positive outcomes for residents.


5)Dr Faye Ruddock DL RN BSc PGCE MSc PhD

Dr Faye Ruddock has a particular expertise in and is passionate about addressing health inequalities in the Black Caribbean and African community. She advocates to ensure that there is fairness and equity across health and social care for the Black community. Prior to joining academia, Faye had several years’ experience in frontline practitioner roles within acute and community settings, she is also the Programme Lead for Master’s in Global Public Health at the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Faye is the Chair of the Caribbean & African Health Network (CAHN) a national organisation which was formed in 2017 as a result of her PhD. CAHN has an ambition to eradicate health inequalities within a generation for Black people and works at both the strategic and operational level to effect that change.

Faye is currently Patient Public Voice (PPV) Lead for NHS Maternity Transformation Programme, North West. She is the Co-Chair for the Greater Manchester and Eastern Cheshire Ethnic Black and Asian Maternity Workstream and sits on the Race and Health Observatory Maternity Stakeholder group.

Faye is an Associate Non-Executive Director for Northern Care Alliance and a Member of the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Race Panel. She is involved in several pieces of research which include the role of Co-Investigator in nursing and racism at Sheffield Hallam University and also maternity research with RCOG and THIS Institute (Oxford University) on maternity related developments to reduce risk in maternity service.
