One of the foremost northern Indian percussion instruments, the tabla has been an integral part of Hindustani music ensembles. It has been featured as an accompanying instrument to vocal and instrumental music and to Kathak dance. In addition, the instrument has been included in several intercultural musical projects due to its rich language and tonal palette. Not surprisingly, the tabla has also had a long legacy as a solo instrument. Its sophisticated vocabulary has led to the creation of various compositional forms and a multitude of compositions that have been explored by six major styles of tabla playing.
The 3-day workshop conducted by Aneesh Pradhan for Jackfruit 2024 will focus on the aesthetics and interpretation of some of this tabla solo repertoire. Aspects such as tonal variation and dynamics that are vital for tabla players to develop an expressive quality in their performance, will be discussed in this workshop.
