Celebrate Norway's Constitution Day (17 May) here in Kansas City. We have reserved picnic Shelter #4 near the marina at Shawnee Mission Park. We will be set up by 4:00 PM, but you may join us at any time during the afternoon or early evening. The lodge will provide a main dish and drinks. Attendees are encouraged to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share. Come out and meet new people, socialize with lodge members, enjoy food and drink, and talk about Norway. You’ll even have a chance to learn a few dances, taught by members of the Scandinavian Folk Dancers of Kansas City.
There is no cost to attend. Watch your email for a formal invitation (from Evite) and be sure to RSVP so we can plan for enough food.
Syttende Mai (SET-nuh MY) means 17th of May in Norwegian, and it stands for the historic day in 1814 when some Norwegians signed the Kongeriket Norgest Grunnlov, making Norway's constitution the second-oldest written constitution in the world. Each year in Norway, this day is celebrated with red, white, and blue ribbons and flags, parades, traditional costumes, food, and music.
