SYNBIO101: Introduction to Biohacking – Overview
This class is for curious 13–15 year olds who want to explore how scientists can engineer living systems. You’ll dive into synthetic biology, build hands-on lab skills, and experiment with living cells. The class takes place over two consecutive Saturdays and one ticket includes both dates. No prior experience needed.
Session 1 (May 23) from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Build & Transform
- Learn what synthetic biology and biohacking are
- Review basic lab safety
- Perform a bacterial transformation—add new DNA to living cells
- Learn techniques to culture your bacteria
- Start incubation to grow results for the following week
Session 2 (May 30) from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM: See & Create
- Hands-on micropipetting workshop
- Observe and interpret your experimental results
- Create art with your new genetically modified organism
- Build your own synthetic organism through an interactive video game experience
