In connection with an international workshop held in the Study Room of the Royal Collection of Prints and Drawings at SMK, we are hosting two public lectures focusing on the Danish-German artist Melchior Lorck (1526/27–1583). The lectures will provide a general introduction both to his works and to the historical context in which they were created.

Melchior Lorck is one of the most fascinating artists of the Renaissance, though he still remains a somewhat elusive and enigmatic figure. Many questions can be raised about both his life and his artistic practice. Research into his works has not been overwhelming, considering his international stature. Nevertheless, he has played a unique role, particularly in Danish art history, where he has traditionally been regarded as Danish – as the first internationally significant artist from Denmark. In recent years, however, new interest has emerged, supported by the major monographic exhibition at SMK in the winter of 2023/2024 and the completion of the catalogue raisonné of his life’s work. The event is part of this renewed attention.

Please note: For the benefit of our international participants, the lectures and related events will be conducted in English.
