About this Event
"Symbols of identity" presents the exhibition сollection of 21st сentury battered towels in Rotterdam!
This art project turned individual stories into a collective experience, uniting Ukrainians from Australia to the USA, from Japan to Europe. On the Independence Day of Ukraine, on August 24, 2025, Ukrainians from 22 countries of the world simultaneously created vybiika towels, which became part of a joint unique collection:
- 30 unique towels
- 22 participating countries
- A single moment of creation - synchronously in the world.
Vybiika is an ancient technique of decorating fabric, known in Ukraine since the 11th century, and today it stands as a symbol of Ukrainian culture.
The project is a powerful tool of cultural diplomacy, shaping a dialogue between Ukraine and the world in times of war. Through the combination of traditional crafts and contemporary art, it actualizes Ukrainian cultural heritage in a global context and demonstrates the unity of Ukrainians regardless of geography.
Guests of the exhibitions will enjoy presentations of the collection of hand-made vybiika towels, workshops, fashion-shows of Karina Gaeva's handmade clothing collection and Ukrainian bites.
The events will be held with the participation of the initiator of the international art project “Symbols of Identity” - Karina Gaeva. With the support of the Ukrainian House Rotterdam and the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
