Individually prized, culturally significant, and universally recognized, perhaps no other item evokes Native American history and tradition more than the eagle feather war bonnet. These elaborate headdresses served as powerful visual symbols in both war and ceremony. Only after several individual feats of bravery might a warrior earn enough eagle feathers to make his bonnet. This exhibition explores the history of the eagle feather headdress from its origins in the Central Plains in the early 1800s to its ongoing importance in tribal communities today.
