Pioneering Singapore choir SYC Ensemble Singers led by Cultural Medallion recipient Jennifer Tham will stage a concert of music by Singaporean composers in celebration of the nation’s 60th birthday and continuation of the choir’s own 60th anniversary last year.
With the body electric the choir will continue pushing boundaries in the local arts scene with a performance exploring how bodies produce and remember sound. The programme will include the world premiere of the titular piece a three-composer work by Tham and choir alumni Diana Soh and Americ Goh as well as music from Joyce Bee Tuan Koh and Hoh Chung Shih. The titular work draws its text from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass interwoven with fragments from the choir’s 60 years of sonic memory. The choral theatre performance will culminate with the choir and audience ‘performing’ together as the audience provides a soundscape accompaniment to the singing onstage using their mobile devices and a messaging interface.
