About this Event
TOKA: The Game Must Go On is a short documentary about the traditional O’odham women’s sport of Toka, a game carried through generations by women who used it to test their strength, build teamwork, sharpen strategy, and challenge neighboring villages. The film follows Ty, a young O’odham girl approaching adulthood, as she discovers the power of Toka not only as a competitive sport but also as a way to understand herself, her community, and the teachings passed down by her elders.
Through Ty’s journey, the film reveals how Toka helps young women learn resilience, confidence, discipline, identity, and connection. As she plays, competes, and listens to the lessons embedded in the game, Ty begins to understand who she has been and who she is becoming.
The Game Must Go On speaks to the next generation of O’odham girls and women, encouraging them to keep this tradition alive so they can learn, as their elders did, the many lessons of life through the strength, strategy, and spirit of Toka.
