When legendary music impresario Phil Walden signed Boston’s Swinging Steaks to his iconic Southern rock label Capricorn records in 1993, there was no term for the genre now known as “Americana”.
The Steaks’ national debut “Southside of the Sky” still stands as a sterling example of American roots music and what award-winning music journalist Ben Edmonds called in Creem magazine – “the best country-rock out of Boston since Harvard student Gram Parsons launched his International Submarine Band.” Over thirty years, eight albums and thousands of shows later, the Steaks are still swinging.
Right from the release of their 1992 debut CD, Suicide at the Wishing Well, people stood up and took notice. They were named one of the “10 Best Unsigned Bands in the Country” by CMJ. A prized showcase at South by Southwest in Austin followed, as did a contract with Capricorn Records who released the band’s second album “South Side of the Sky” distributed by Warner Brothers.
“South Side” garnered the group two Top ten AAA singles (‘Beg, Steal, or Borrow’ and ‘Circlin’) and exposed the Steaks to a nationwide audience with appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and NPR’s Mountain Stage. The album made several critics Top 10 Albums of the Year and were featured in a Billboard Magazine cover story sharing the spotlight with Uncle Tupelo and the Jayhawks. Movie and television song placements plus tours/guest spots with Los Lobos, The Band, Hank Williams Jr, the Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Poco, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Paul Westerberg, and John Fogerty clearly display their pedigree and musical diversity.
Subsequent album releases found the band moving forward – expanding their audience and songwriting craft. “Shiner”, “Kick Snare Hat”, two live albums (“Bare” and “Live in ’93”) join “Sunday Best” (released on Germany’s Blue Rose and US-based First National) in the band’s catalog.
“YoYo”, the Steaks’ latest collection of all-new material was released last year. Co-produced by Boston rock legend Dave Minehan (Neighborhoods, Replacements), “YoYo” features 11 original tunes from writers Jamie Walker, Tim Giovanniello and Jim Gambino. The sole cover was written by “Big” Al Anderson (x-NRBQ) and multi-platinum artist Chris Stapleton. Cody Nilsen (GA-20) guests on pedal steel and slide guitars.
The Steaks live show offers audiences an opportunity to witness the magic of a band forged by over three decades together onstage. Reflecting their sheer joy of playing together, the Steaks dynamic, charismatic performance can’t be fabricated.

Christa Joy is the band leader of Western Mass group Christa Joy and the Honeybees. She is known for her strong sense of melody, resonant storytelling, and charming sincerity. Christa Joy is a Mom of three, including twins, a forest educator and lover of words. Her fourth album, self-titled with band “Christa Joy and the Honeybees,” released August 2024.
