An immersive evening of Hindustani classical music, Vidushi Sujata Gurav Kamara brings the contemplative beauty and emotional depth of the Kirana Gharana to life with her nuanced artistry.
In Hindustani classical music, the Kirana Gharana is known for its meditative architecture of sound, its devotion to pure swar, expansive raga development and emotional clarity. Vidushi Sujata Gurav Kamara steps into this tradition with authority, developed through rigorous training under her father and guru, Late Pandit Sangameshwar Gurav, and refined further as a disciple of Pandit Kaivalya Kumar Gurav.
‘Swar Dhara’ places her artistry within that lineage while revealing a distinctly personal voice. With a gentle tone and instinctive command over phirat, layakari and taans, she allows each raga to evolve with patience and purpose. The measured progression characteristic of the Kirana style finds clear expression in her singing, with phrases articulated carefully, silences held with intent and emotion emerging gradually rather than overstated.
The repertoire centres on khayal, complemented by thumri, abhang, vachana and natya sangeet, reflecting both depth and range. Having appeared at platforms including Tansen Sangeet Samaroh and Harivallabh Samaroh, accompanied by Pt Kalinath Mishra on Tabla and Vinod Padge on Harmonium, along with other leading cultural forums across India, Sujata brings to the stage experience and an educator’s clarity of thought.
The evening presents a focused exploration of raga as a sustained act of listening, disciplined, expansive and connected to the living continuum of the Kirana Gharana.
