WALKING TOUR with Dr Shane Burke, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology and History.
THE SWAN district and the COMING of the CONVICTS
Sunday, 1 March
8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
The tour will commence at the Guildford Colonial Gaol, located at 24 Meadow Street.
Please arrive by 8:15 am for an 8:30 am departure.
Join Dr Shane Burke on a guided tour of Barker’s Bridge and other historically significant sites related to the convict history of Guildford.
For different reasons, in the late 1840s, it was those in York, Toodyay, and Fremantle who wished the introduction of convicts to Western Australia. However, it was the Swan district that saw the first convict public works in Guildford and its agricultural region.
Morning Tea will be provided upon return to Judy Hamersley House, where Shane will present a talk highlighting significant artefacts from the Swan Guildford Historical Society's collection and discuss their background and significance.
You will learn about the society's role in collecting, preserving, and displaying items related to the early settlement of Guildford and the Swan Valley in Western Australia and how you can become a volunteer with the society.
