This class is a three-week series at Solfed Farm (https://solfedfarms.org/), Kalamazoo MI, in collaboration with Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Food Innovation Center. This three-week hands-on workshop series introduces participants to natural building finishes. Designed for homeowners, builders, designers, and sustainability enthusiasts, the course blends practical demonstrations with foundational building science principles. Participants will learn how to identify and prepare clay soils, mix earthen plaster, and apply a traditional three-coat plaster system (scratch, brown, and finish coats).
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify different clay soils suitable for Earthen plaster
- Apply plaster mixing techniques and fiber reinforcement
- Test strength and durability of earthen plasters
- Understand code considerations and fire performance
