Sustainability Salon: Biodiversity Net Gain

How can we deliver Biodiversity Net Gain in Scotland and the UK? Join the conversation with industry, regulators and academics.
About this Event

In England, developers must now deliver a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), ensuring that new developments leave nature in a better state than they found it. BNG is expected to come to Scotland as well, meaning future construction projects will need to plan for measurable increases in biodiversity. In Glasgow, GALLANT has already made halting biodiversity loss one of its core aims.

How can we ensure that our interactions with the natural environment deliver positive outcomes going forward? This includes restoring opportunities for native species to recover, supporting the emergence of new ecological niches, and transitioning from monocultured, intensively managed landscapes to natural webs of supply and demand.

While we all have a stake in this issue, we invite landowners, developers, policymakers, regulators, community groups, and subject‑matter experts to contribute their perspectives, reducing the risk of fragmented or isolated approaches.

We invite realistic, practical, and frank conversations that can lead to complementary projects to strengthen our biodiversity strategy and support the UK – one of the world’s most industrialised and historically managed landscapes – in repairing ecological damage accumulated over centuries.

About the Sustainability Salons

Organised by Knowledge Exchange Associate David Hughes, the Sustainability Salons bring together the practical knowledge of industry and the technical and theoretical expertise of academics, to inspire projects that will help solve sustainability issues. We have EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) funding available to support these projects.
