Join us Monday, March 24, 3:30 - 6:00 pm for WAMA’s One Night Only event with Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia to celebrate our Surreal South Bookmaking initiative for 2024-2025. ✨Surreal South is a multidisciplinary educational program that empowers Mississippi K-12 students to voice their Southern experiences through writing, illustration, and printmaking. This project will result in an exhibition of student work that will be shown at the 2025 Mississippi Book Festival. The notebooks’ illustrated covers combine mixed-media materials, images, text, and narrative to speak to Mississippi’s multifaceted story and to the students’ memories, beliefs, and aspirations.
The Lighthouse Academy for Dyslexia joined WAMA in this initiative by collaborating across the curriculums of art, theater, and english to create books that will be displayed at the event on the 24th of March. WAMA hosted visiting artists Ke Francis and Anne Madden, to lead workshops to show printmaking and collage techniques to the students and teachers to help create imagery for the students’ books. The museum will select from these and other bookmaking projects from across the state to be showcased at the 2025 Mississippi Book Festival in Jackson, MS.
