About this Event

Background

Around one in four mothers who experience care proceedings will return to court in subsequent proceedings. Many of these women experience multiple and intersecting disadvantages, often compounded by the trauma associated with child removal. There is an urgent need to better understand how services can support mothers’ mental health and wellbeing and interrupt cycles of disadvantage and repeated care proceedings.

About the event

What works to support the mental health and wellbeing of mothers at risk of recurrent care proceedings, and to prevent care entry of their children?

Professor Ruth McGovern invites you to join researchers from Newcastle University and partners, to a half-day, in-person event. At the event we will share findings from a recent evidence synthesis examining how best to support the mental health and wellbeing of mothers at risk of recurrent care proceedings and, where it is safe to do so, prevent their children entering care. We will present key insights from research, including what works, for whom, in what contexts and why. Attendees will participate in discussion about the implications of these findings for practice and agree actionable recommendations for the local and national health and social care system. The event will be followed by networking over lunch (provided).

Who should attend?

We are inviting practitioners and managers from across social care, health and the community and voluntary sector who work with mothers at risk of repeat care proceedings. This is likely to include social workers, family support workers, midwives, drug and alcohol practitioners, mental health practitioners, domestic abuse practitioners and those working in public health.

By bringing together practitioners with the project researchers, the event aims to translate research evidence into practical insights that can inform service design, commissioning, and the development of more effective, trauma-informed approaches to supporting mothers at risk of recurrent care proceedings and preventing their children entering care.

This workshop is for practitioners. Further research dissemination for academics will be undertaken in the Autumn. Agenda to follow.
