About this Event
Saturday, May 18, 12–5 PM EDT FREE
Join us to celebrate a day honoring the memories of our ancestors, family traditions, and the power of women storytellers, inspired by the new exhibition, Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archeology of Memory, a retrospective by the pioneering artist, curator, and theorist. Born in 1943 to a Mexican immigrant family, Mesa-Bains is a leading figure in Chicanx art for nearly half a century, producing work that explores intersectional feminist themes, environmentally centered spirituality, and cultural diversity. Throughout the day, explore the exhibition with free gallery tours, and meet us in the Cafe on 104th Street for art activities, storytelling, and dance workshops.
The block party will be followed by a special concert in El Teatro, featuring Caña Dulce y Caña Brava presented by El Museo del Barrio in partnership with Carnegie Hall Citywide. As heirs of jarocho culture and noteworthy performers with years of experience on both national and international stages, Caña Dulce y Caña Brava’s performances celebrate the music, poetry, dance and traditional attire of Veracruz, Mexico. The group stands out as an artistic project that highlights feminine poetry and voices, accompanied by traditional string instruments such as the harp and the jarana, percussion, and zapateado.
All ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please note, activities will take place inside if there is inclement weather.
Pre-registration is advised; all activities are first come, first served.
