Sunset Baby — A Play by Dominique Morisseau
Produced by Orange Box Theater
In the quiet of a Brooklyn apartment, a reckoning unfolds.
Set in early-2000s East New York, Sunset Baby is an intimate, unflinching drama about what remains after the revolution—and who pays the price. When Kenyatta, a former Black revolutionary and long-incarcerated political prisoner, reenters the life of his estranged daughter Nina, he is not seeking forgiveness. He wants something she now controls: the legacy of her late mother—and possibly his own redemption.
Nina has survived by fortifying herself against the world her parents once tried to change. Kenyatta returns carrying guilt, conviction, and unfinished ideals. As father and daughter collide, buried truths emerge about love, power, sacrifice, and the cost of believing in something larger than yourself.
Written by acclaimed playwright Dominique Morisseau, Sunset Baby is a raw, electric examination of generational inheritance—political, emotional, and deeply personal. With Morisseau’s signature lyricism and precision, the play asks urgent questions that resonate now more than ever:
What do we owe the movements that shaped us?
What do we owe ourselves?
And who decides what survives?
Orange Box Theater presents Sunset Baby as part of its relaunch season—an actor-centered, story-driven production that places audiences inside the emotional aftermath of revolution.
This is not a nostalgia piece.
This is not a history lesson.
This is a reckoning—happening in real time.
Join us for a powerful evening of contemporary theater that lingers long after the lights fade.
