Sundown Celebration: Summer Solstice at Artshack
Join us at sundown to welcome the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.
At 6:30 PM, Sonic Mud performs—a live earthen sound project featuring ceramic instruments by artist Julia Elsas. Through improvisation on hand-built flutes, drums, whistles, and chimes, Sonic Mud brings the resonant, elemental sound of clay to life, drawing inspiration from traditional ceramic instruments, including Igbo udu drums and ancient wind instruments from the Americas.
The evening continues ideas from the recent Wind Chimes Workshop with Julia Elsas, with students from Artshack’s afterschool program joining as special guests, becoming the wind that activates the performance.

This gathering is part two of three celebrations marking Artshack’s 10th anniversary. We began with Mud Wrestling, continue with this Solstice celebration, and will close with our Autumn Equinox Fundraiser on September 26—save the date.
As a nonprofit, events like this support our mission to make clay accessible through classes, youth programs, and community programming.
