On 12th May at 5pm, Jesters Comedy presents the Sunday afternoon edition of the ‘Why Is There A Banana?’ Stand-Up Comedy Open Mic at Beneroti in Finnieston, the only comedy show with a name that can be traced back to a forgetful monkey. Featuring a mix of seasoned pros trying out new material, first timers taking to the stage, and everyone in between, entry is free of charge, and all are welcome to watch or perform.
Your host for the afternoon is award-losing comedian Charlie Wallace. Starting his career on the English language Asia comedy circuit, he has performed extensively in China and Vietnam, as well as Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and once in Eqypt. Over his six year stand-up career he’s opened shows featuring Ardal O’Hanlon, Glenn Wool, Phil Kay, Martin Mor and Greg Fleet to name but a few. Now based in Glasgow, he runs Comedy Dundee, Dundee’s most imaginatively named comedy club, as well as working with Jesters and Craicfriars Comedy.
“Excellent and gets better every time I see him.” – Ross Leslie
"A natural born comedy mind. Funny. Odd. Absurd." - Magners International Comedy Festival
Just want to watch? All are welcome free of charge, but please respect the show: during performances please be seated and don’t talk or heckle. You can reserve a seat on Eventbrite for no charge.
Interested in performing? Sign-up opens from 12 noon one week before the show, message the FB page and 5 minute slots will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.
Recurring on the second Sunday and last Thursday of each month.

**PLEASE READ CAREFULLY**
• The show is in three parts separated by two intervals. Doors open at 4:30pm, half an hour before the start time of 5pm. Please arrive before the show starts.
• This is NOT a standing event. All audience members must be seated while the performance is underway, unless getting up to leave the room.
• You may have to share a table. You may not be able to sit together if the remaining chairs available are spread out. If it is important to you to sit with people you know, we recommend arriving as early as possible.
• If you are arranging on behalf of a large group of people, please make sure everyone is aware talking is not permitted during performances. Hen parties and stag dos, this is probably not the event for you.
• Please don’t talk or heckle during the performances; it is very distracting for both the performer and other audience members. Some performers (usually the host) may invite audience interaction, but otherwise please let the comedians do the talking. Heckling does not ‘help the show’. Think of it like cinema rules: laughter, cheers, applause are all great, but talking or yelling out is not. And another cinema rule…
• Please put your phone on silent. Photos are fine but please no video or flash photography.
• These shows are for people aged 18 and over. You may be asked to show ID if you do not look of age.
• Jesters Comedy Club does not necessarily agree or disagree with the opinions and viewpoints expressed by the comedians. Acts are booked based on their ability to make people laugh, beyond that we respect freedom of expression. If you disagree or are offended by what you hear, you are free to express this by not laughing, by leaving, or by respectfully raising your objections with the act after the show or via social media. You may not interrupt an on-going performance.
• Exceptions to rules are at the discretion of Jesters Comedy Club. Audience members who repeatedly break these rules will be asked to leave.
RULES FOR PERFORMERS
• You’ll get five minutes unless you’ve been booked to do longer. 10s and hosting spots are by invitation only, they can’t be applied for.
• When you’re on stage keep a close eye on where the host is, he will be timing everyone. If they flash a yellow phone screen at you, that means 1 minute left. If they flash a red screen at you, that means wrap it up quick. If you’re halfway through a joke when you get the red and you can finish it in 30 seconds or less, you can do so, but be warned, people who abuse their time allocation won’t be invited back.
• Please try to get here for the start of the show. Message the showrunner if you can’t make it.
• You’re not obliged to stay to the end or invite people to come watch, but doing both these things really helps make the show better for everyone.
• You can request whether you go early or late, but it’ll be on a first come first serve basis at the host’s discretion. These requests must be made no less than a few hours before the show.
• If you need to drop out please message the host as soon as possible. You may not arrange your own replacement. Serial drop-outs will be given lower priority for spots. No-shows won’t be invited back.
• If we’re low on audience please be supportive of your fellow acts and sit up front, give them your full attention.
• Your material must be your own, you cannot use jokes performed by other comedians.
