May 27 – The Structure of the Jewish Calendar - Cantor Rodnizki
Why does Rosh Hashanah always feel early or late? Is Passover 7 or 8 days? Why is the JCC opening late again? This session will examine the structure of the Jewish calendar, looking at how nature influences Jewish time, how holidays are scheduled, and how Jewish communities have changed calendar practices over time.
June 17 – Introduction to Sacred Text - Rabbi Erdheim
Are Midrash and Talmud the same thing? Is the Haftarah just half a Torah reading? Who are all these rabbis being quoted? This session offers an introduction to the major texts of Jewish tradition and how they fit together into the story of Jewish learning. We’ll untangle the alphabet soup of Jewish texts and map out how they connect.
July 15 - Israel: Land, People, State - Rabbi Knight
What do Jews mean when they say “Israel”? Israel is not only a political entity but is also one of the deepest and most layered ideas in Jewish life that is at the heart of Jewish identity. This session will explore Israel’s multiple definitions as a covenantal land, a people bound by shared memory and responsibility, and a modern state shaped by refuge, return, trauma, and sovereignty.
August 5 – Explaining Jewish Ritual Garb - Rabbi Nichols
Many Jews choose to wear specific ritual items when they pray. You might see someone enter the sanctuary wearing a kippah (head covering), a tallit (prayer shawl), or tefillin (leather boxes worn on the head and arm). This session will explore the meaning and traditions behind these items. We will discuss why someone might choose to wear them, what characteristics make them significant, and how communities have adapted them over time.
