Join us for an inclusive celebration and help us turn the windows of The National Archives into a kaleidoscopic rainbow for LGBTQ+ Pride!
About this Event

Using brightly coloured clear vinyl, families will help transform The National Archives windows into a stained-glass masterpiece to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride.The end result will be a colourful, large-scale, layered stained glass effect on the windows that will glow and reflect rainbow patterns into the building.

Families can take part in this collaborative installation in either a morning or afternoon session, aongside an exciting timetable of fun, colourful activities to take part in throughout the day.

  • Book either a 11:30 to 12:30 or 2:30 to 3:30pm sessions of the rainbow window project to receive your own pack of clear coloured vinyl and decorate a portion of The National Archives window for Pride. Then it's up to youto create a colourful, abstract stained glass masterpiece! (For ages 5+)
  • Explore colour through the natural world in a fun, natural print-making workshop with award-winning illustrator Sharon King-Chai, drawing inspiration from her beautiful illustrations in the book Colours, Colours Everywhere. (For ages 5+)
  • Create and take your own pride flags and bracelets with YouTuber and Author Olly Pike from Pop’n’Olly or join Olly for a storytelling session highlighting the joy of diversity, difference and everything that makes people unique! (All ages)
  • Fold bright origami butterflies and beautiful hearts with incredible origami artist Toshiko Kurata. (For ages 5+)
  • Discover some of the incredible LGBTQ+ individuals who feature in our collection with our family friendly document display and hear more about the spaces and identities they created for themselves.
  • Express your true colours, and get your face painted with our resident face painters Artycat Faces.


Stained glass sessions, storytelling and print making sessions can be booked as additional add ons at check out. Please book to secure a space.
  • If you book a stained glass session please make your way to the foyer 10 minutes before your booking, so we can sign you in and get you set up with all the supplies you need and your own foyer window pane to decorate. Sessions last one hour.
  • If you book a storytelling session please go to the Auditorium 5 minutes before the session is due to begin. Sessions last 30 minutes
  • If you book a print making session please meet in level one by the print making sign 5 minutes before your session. Sessions last 45 minutes.

Key Event Information

The National Archives is committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, respectful, and safe space for families to come together and have fun celebrating Pride. We expect that all attendees respect the welfare and safety of other attendees, staff and presenters involved in the day.

All persons attending the event require a ticket for entry - children and adults.

We don't have any childcare facilities, so you'll need to stay with your children at all times during the event.

Quiet break out spaces will be available on level one.

The day is fully flexible, so you can drop in for 30 minutes, or stay for the whole five hours. Activities run throughout the day, so you don't need to arrive at 11.00am.

Getting Here and Parking

The closest station to The National Archives is Kew Gardens, approximately 10 mins walk away. It is serviced by the London Overground and District lines.

While we do have onsite parking available we encourage visitors to use public transport if they can. Visitor parking will be free but limited.
