Summer Movies on the Lawn: The Sound of Music (Audience Singalong) Join us for our fourth annual “Summer Movies on the Lawn” outdoor film festival this summer, presenting the classic "The Sound of Music" (1965) with an audience singalong.
One of the most popular movie musicals of all time, "The Sound of Music" (1965) is based on the true story of the Trapp Family Singers. Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a young nun in an Austrian convent who is sent off by the Mother Superior (Peggy Wood) to be governess for the children of widower Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). Maria wins over the children and eventually the stern captain, and the two fall in love and marry, only to return from their honeymoon as the Nazis overtake their country. The family covertly flees Austria to safety during a public musical performance. Directed by Robert Wise with a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, the film features nearly a dozen tunes including the infectious "Do-Re- Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "Edelweiss," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and the title song. It earned numerous awards including best picture and best director Oscars, and solidified the status of Julie Andrews as bona fide movie star, a feat she began with "Mary Poppins."
Part of the Library’s fourth annual “Summer Movies on the Lawn” outdoor film festival, this series of films showcases iconic films from the Library’s National Film Registry, will be presented on Thursday evenings at sundown this summer on the north lawn of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building, across the street from the U.S. Capitol. No tickets are required for these outdoor film screenings, but capacity will be limited. Each group of attendees will be assigned a seating location that is at least six feet apart from other attendee groups. Guests may bring their own food and beverages, but alcohol is prohibited.
Fully vaccinated attendees are not required to wear masks, but those who are not fully vaccinated (meaning two weeks past their final shot) must wear masks at all times, except when actively eating or drinking.
Located between the Supreme Court and the Jefferson Building at 10 First St., SE (running the length of East Capitol Street between First and Second streets, SE), the north lawn of the Jefferson Building provides a magnificent space for people to watch films in the shadows of the U.S. Capitol Building.
Seating on the lawn will be available starting at 6:30 p.m., with the film to commence at sunset (times will vary).
