Welcome to the Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre's Summer Living History Day! Get ready for an unforgettable experience filled with creativity, exploration, and excitement. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a family on an adventure, or just passing through, our vibrant replica Iron Age village will transport you to the past, offering thrilling activities and engaging exhibits that celebrate our ancient heritage. Join us for a day of fun where history comes alive!
Come meet fellow craft enthusiasts, learn new techniques, and get inspired to create your own masterpieces. The day will include a range of hands-on craft stalls, demonstrations, and tours covering human life from the end of the Stone Age to the Roman period.
This event is suitable for all ages, with hands-on craft stalls ideal for children and young adults, face-to-face interaction with craft specialists, and ongoing craft demonstrations that depict how people perfected the crafts needed to survive in the ancient past.
The Living History day will be open from 10 am to 3 pm, with one ticket giving you access for the whole day, so you can dip in and out.
Activities run during the sessions will include the following and much more:
Pigments and paints, Iron Age pottery making, flintknapping, ancient textiles and weaving, jewellery making, ironworking!
Guided museum and roundhouse tours by our wonderful heritage volunteers, and tours of the archaeological sites on the headland by local experts.
A anceint food table to show you what your dinner might have looked like 2,000 years ago!
Face-to-face demonstration with archaeology experts!
Mock excavation pits, flint knapping and target practice, Ancient textiles, hurdle making and bronze casting!
Sliding-scale pricing
We are offering a sliding-scale pricing system to promote accessibility and community involvement at our larger events. We will never ask you to justify your choice, but if you can, please consider selecting the 'Pay it forward' or 'Comfortable' option to help us offer reduced rates to lower-income participants.
