Slime, glow-in-the-dark experiments & wild reactions! Hands-on science where girls get messy, curious & confident in STEM.About this Event
Slime. Glow. Wild reactions.
Put on your lab coat (we'll provide it) and get ready to make a mess in the name of science. This week is all about hands-on experimentation, chemical reactions, and the joy of discovery—designed specifically to engage girls in STEM through fun, freedom, and a little bit of chaos. This is not boring textbook science. This is Mad Science.Week 5 at The Gathering Place transforms our space into a laboratory where girls become scientists, inventors, and experimenters. In our all-girls microschool environment, campers explore chemistry, physics, and biology through tactile, messy, exciting activities that build both knowledge and confidence in scientific thinking.
What Girls Will Experience
• Slime chemistry (polymers, viscosity, texture engineering)
• Glow-in-the-dark and fluorescence experiments
• Volcanic reactions and explosive chemistry (safe, of course!)
• Oobleck and non-Newtonian fluids
• Bath bomb and soap-making science
• Crystal growing and geology exploration
• Simple circuits and LED projects
• Scientific method and hypothesis testingEach day brings new experiments, new questions, and new opportunities to get hands-on with scientific principles. Girls measure, mix, observe, and record—learning that science is about curiosity, trial and error, and the thrill of discovery.
More Than MessAt The Gathering Place, everything is intentional. We integrate:
• Scientific vocabulary and concept introduction
• Hypothesis formation and testing methodology
• Lab safety and responsible experimentation
• Data recording and observation skills
• Problem-solving when experiments don't go as planned
• Confidence-building in STEM identity for girls
• Connection-making between play and scientific principlesGirls learn that scientists ask questions, make mistakes, get messy, and try again. They discover that STEM is creative, collaborative, and absolutely for them. This is inquiry-based learning that sticks because it's fun.
Who This Week Is Perfect For
• Girls who love hands-on activities and getting messy
• Girls curious about how things work
• Girls who enjoy cooking, crafting, or building
• Girls who might be hesitant about "science" but love slime and experiments
• Girls who ask "why" and "what if" constantly
• Girls who thrive in active, tactile learning environmentsNo science background needed. Just curiosity and clothes that can get messy.
The Grand FinaleThe week culminates in a Science Expo, where families explore the week's experiments, view the girls' lab notebooks, and watch live demonstrations. Slime. Glow. Genuine scientific pride.Small groups. Big reactions. Real sisterhood. This is where curiosity meets chemistry.
