About this Event

WHAT WE DO ALL DAY

Here is a brief description of what we do "Down on the Farm".

Feed the Animals: Every day, after we all arrive, we feed and play with the animals: 16 goats, 3 sheep, 2 donkeys, 2 rabbits, about 45 chickens, and 2 barn cats. Feeding the animals is followed by a "learning session".

Learning Session: For each day there is a different focus: soils; sun, wind, and rain; plants; pollinators and pests; and animals. That meeting is about a half hour or 45 minutes long.

Free Time: There is then free time when they can go fishing in the pond, hiking in the woods or building forts, jumping on the trampoline, or more playing with the animals (or other activities based on their own ideas).

Practical Application: After lunch, we have a session involving the practical application of the things we learned about in the morning. That too is about a half an hour or 45 minutes long.

Special Activity: Afterwards there is often a guest speaker or a special activity (a map and compass reading treasure hunt or archery or a visit from a spinner and weaver to talk about sheep and wool, for example), and then more free time until it's time for arts and crafts.

Art Project:Each day has an art project sometimes based on the day's theme: playing with clay on soils day, making stained glass pictures on the "sun" day, pipe cleaner animals, weaving, sand art, etc. The art project rounds out the day.

Stories:in the afternoon, for those who are interested, we read stories from Heidi, The Hobbit, Aesop's Fables, and James Harriot.

Free Time: There is lots of built in free time each day so that they can return as they wish to activities they have enjoyed either earlier in the day or week. If they want to spend their days building forts or fishing or returning to a favored art project, when not in the two learning sessions, that is wonderful. From our perspective, it's the way summer should be!
