Summer Art Camp: Intro to Art Materials for children with Special Needs (Ages 5-11)
Ages: 5-11, Children with Special Needs only *** when registering, please email me with any accommodations you may require. [email protected]***
Class Overview:
Do you have a child with Special Needs that is interested in art? Are you concerned that a “traditional” art class will not be a good fit for them? This class is for you! I have taught art for 26 years. For 9 years, I taught art at a CAIU school for students with special needs. I have taught students with Downs Syndrome, ADHD, Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and Trauma. I have discovered that pre-planning, adaptation, and being able to think outside the box help contribute to successfully teaching this amazing population. In this 3 hour class, I will introduce your child to numerous types of art materials and techniques. The class will be limited to 6, to maintain focus on the student and their individual needs. Students will get lots of hands-on experience using various art supplies, while learning basic art techniques. If your child requires “hand over hand” assistance, please attend the class with them. There will also be a “Create Station”, for any child that needs a break from structure and instruction. At the Create Station, they will be able to “play” with art supplies and create whatever they wish. Disclaimer… students will get messy. Please have them wear old clothes.
- Canvas Painting Landscape: Students will learn about the various elements of a landscape, and how to paint them. This includes a sky, land formations, water formations, and details.
- Stencil Painting: Learn how to use a stencil and brush/sponge to create a layered artwork.
- Oil Pastel Butterfly: Learn how to apply oil pastels to paper. Students will use an eraser to blend them.
- Sharpie and Watercolor Flowers: Students will learn how to safely and responsibly use a sharpie marker. They will draw birds and flowers, then color them with watercolor.
- If time permits…Yarn Critter: Students will make a yarn puffball and will add embellishments to it to turn it into a cute animal critter.
Tanya Haller Artist Bio:
I have taught all levels of art for 25 years, in a variety of school settings. I have taught Native American children in South Dakota, public and private school children in grades K-12, and children at the IU. I have my Masters in Art Ed and have experience teaching both children and adults with special needs. I also have experience with teaching “Paint nights”, private art instruction, and kids Christmas and summer art camps. I love creating things and thinking “outside the box”. When I teach a class, whether it be in the standard classroom, a paint night, or a child’s birthday party, I have the same approach…. Teach how to do the technique and then let the students/participants use the technique to create their own unique project.
