Walter Murch on the language of film editing and sound design.
About this Event

With Suddenly Something Clicked, the first of three volumes on cinematic history, theory, and practice, Walter Murch shares memories, discoveries, events, successes—and failures!—from his 60 years in the business of film making. He will be joined in conversation by Muriel Murch to explore the language of film and how our minds accept and embrace this artistic medium.

Walter Murch's six-decade career as a film editor, sound designer, writer, and director has unfolded primarily in the Bay Area. His credits include THX-1138, American Graffiti, The Conversation, The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, Ghost, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley and many others. He co-authored and directed Return to Oz (1985) and co-authored and edited the feature documentaries Particle Fever (2014) and Coup 53 (2020). A pioneer of modern film sound, he was instrumental in developing the 5.1 surround format. Murch has won three Oscars and three BAFTAs for his work in editing and sound.

Muriel “Aggie” Murch has published three books and numerous articles on education, healthcare, community, and rural life. Her storytelling career later extended to radio—beginning in 1989 at KPFA in Berkeley in the Drama and Literature Department—and ten years later as co-founder and Program Director of KWMR, West Marin’s community radio station. Her latest book, Harvesting History While Farming the Flats, gathers these threads into one interwoven narrative of farm, family, and film.
