The Subterranean Cinema Club Debuts with Fresh K*ll at the Historic Alice Austen House, Featuring a Drag Performance by Frankie Fingahs
Staten Island, NY — September 13, 2025 — Deep in the underbelly of New York cinema comes a new film collective with a femme-forward, camp-committed vision: The Subterranean Cinema Club. Join us for our inaugural screening on Friday, September 13th at the iconic Alice Austen House, featuring Shu Lea Cheang’s electrifying 1994 eco-cyberpunk cult classic, Fresh K*ll—and a special drag performance by the inimitable Frankie Fingahs.
Subterranean Cinema Club is a Staten Island–based, femme-powered film collective dedicated to screening underground, subversive, and underseen cinema. We amplify films that exist outside the mainstream—queer, camp, cult, experimental, and visionary works that challenge cinematic norms and ignite collective imagination.
Born from a lack of access to transgressive, low-budget, and independent cinema in Staten Island, our mission is to build an inclusive space for bold, disruptive filmmaking and the communities it reflects. In a borough too often underserved by the city’s broader arts landscape, we aim to platform the strange, the political, the poetic, and the perverse.
Through site-specific screenings in unexpected spaces—historic homes, community gardens, parking lots, backyards—we reclaim spectatorship as an act of joy, rebellion, and connection. We center femme and queer voices, uplift local and marginalized artists, and create cinematic experiences that are as wild and unruly as the films we show.
Subterranean Cinema Club is where celluloid meets Staten Island, and the underground comes up for air.
